Chapter 9

Hamish raced from the campsite back to their home in San Diego after receiving the call from Angie. There were so many things going through his mind. His heart, of course, was hurting, his blood pressure spiking, almost leaving him breathless. He knew he had to calm down and be careful.

And especially since they’d learned all of this new information about the trafficking business, it made all the possible tragic outcomes flash through his brain, making everything worse. He knew how bad it could be. Try as he could, he couldn’t shake the horrible feeling in his stomach that this was so far out of his control there was no clearcut solution. The pressure was making him feel confused.

He knew this was sort of a fog of war type of thing. Something warriors found when they discovered themselves in an untenable situation or something so dangerous that it was likely there were going to be multiple sacrifices made. The only question was when would be his turn.

His phone started blowing up while he was driving. The two boys sat stoically in the second seat, Andrew electing to sit next to Ian who was in tears ever since he’d heard about Sasha’s disappearance. He loved that about Andrew, the fact that he could focus in on what he could do instead of what he couldn’t do.

Right now, Hamish was trying to find that balance and that concentration. But the incessant phone calls and text messages received were making it hard to keep that focus. He even got a phone call from the President of the United States, extolling his concerns and offering to give whatever assistance he could to Harper and Hamish and the team. He asked him if there was anything in particular he could use.

Hamish told him, “Prayers. And maybe more special agents, people you trust.” He explained the scenario, the fact that this had occurred at the convention center with thousands of underage girls and too few chaperones to control them all, the doors wide open to the general public to come and go with no checks. It was not a controlled scenario or one that the team would be able to easily limit. Impossible was the word he was thinking of.

“There are just too many people, too many children, and too much to investigate in the middle of the chaos of the festival. I feel so helpless,” he told the president.

“I do understand. Rest assured, they’re going to come up with something. Maybe cancelling the festival would help with some of that.”

“Sir, at this point, I don’t know. I just know that it’s gonna be difficult to get the kind of information we need to even start looking for her.”

“I’m sending a couple of my best, men I would use to protect my own family if it ever came to that. They’re both special Federal agents. They’ve been with me ever since I was a senator. Think they can help. They’ll be looking for you and calling you direct.
